Fertilizer Management
-
Application of farmyard manure to an extent of 8-10 tonne/acre is desirable for final ploughing.
| State | Fertilizer recommendation (NPK in kg/acre) for local varieties | Fertilizer recommendation (NPK in kg/acre) for hybrid varieties | Time of Application |
|---|---|---|---|
| Andhra Pradesh and Telangana | 40:24:24 | 60:36:36 | Whole P & K as basal. N should be applied in 3 equal splits on 30, 45 & 60 days after transplanting (DAT). |
| Karnataka | Irrigated: 46:40:24 Rainfed: 24:20:12 | 100:100:100 | Whole P, K & 50% of N should be applied in the furrows as basal dose. Rest 50% of N should be applied after 4 weeks of transplanting. |
| Maharashtra | 80:40:40 | 120:60:60 | Whole P, K & 50% of N should be applied as basal dose. Rest 50% of N should be applied in three equal splits at 20 days interval. |
| Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar | 40-60:24-32:20-24; 80N for indeterminate varieties | 80:24-32:20-24 | Whole P, K & 1/3rd of N should be applied as basal dose. Rest N should be divided into two equal parts and applied at 25-30 and 45-50 DAT. |
| Gujarat | 60:40:20 | 80:100:100 | Varieties – whole P, K & 50%N as basal dose and rest N at 30 DAT. Hybrids – whole P, 40 kg of K & 20 kg of N as a basal dose and rest 60 kg of N & 60 kg of K in three equal splits at 30,45 & 60 DAT. |

Micronutrient mixtures can also be sprayed to boost the crop growth and to manage the deficiencies.
-
Fertilizer requirements may vary from region to region. So, it is advisable to apply the fertilizers based on the soil test recommendations.
FOLIAR NUTRIENT SPRAYS
-
Micronutrient sprays should be done @ 3-5g/litre for 2-3 times once in every 10-15 days after 45 days of transplanting and number of sprays can be increased based on the crop duration.
-
Foliar nutrition with 19:19:19, potassium sulphate @ 5g/L, during the fruit development stage for every 10-15 days interval will help in developing fruit size and quality.
-
Calcium nitrate @5 g/L should be sprayed instead of calcium nitrate at 10-15 day intervals from 60 days after planting until fruit harvesting.
-
Ensure not mixing of calcium with 19:19:19 or any phosphorus containing nutrients to avoid incompatibility.
