Sowing time
SOWING TIME
-
The sowing time varies according to the growing season.
-
Timely sowing increases the productivity and lowers the occurrence of diseases and pests.
-
During Kharif season the ideal time of sowing of urd bean is the first fortnight of July.
-
However, in the event of late onset of monsoon or failure of timely sown crop, it can be sown successfully by July end but beyond that, the yield of urdbean declines drastically.
-
In southern India, kharif sowing is recommended from 15-30 June and spring sowing is recommended from first fortnight of March.
-
Rabi sowing of urd bean is also done under rice fallow in the month of December and January.
SOWING METHOD
-
A row spacing of 45 cm during kharif season and 30 cm during spring season is ideal for sowing of urdbean crop.
-
Plant to plant distance should be 8-10 cm.
-
Seed should be sown in lines at 4-5 cm depth.
SEED RATE
-
The seed rate depends on growing season as well as the seed size.
-
Seed rate of 6.4-8 kg/ac is recommended during kharif season to maintain the desired plant population.
-
During summer season, the recommended seed rate is 12-14 kg/ac.
SEED TREATMENT
-
Treat the seeds with Beejamruth.
-
3% solution of Panchagavya @ 30ml/lit water can be used to soak the seeds or to dip the seedlings before planting. Soaking for 20 minutes is sufficient.
-
Treat one kilogram of seed with 5 ml of Rhizobium, phosphorus and potash bacterial culture.
