Pests & Disease Management
False Smut

  • For management of False Smut:
    • High relative humidity, rainy and cloudy days during the flowering period increase the incidence of the disease.
    • It is a fungal disease in which the individual grains transform into large yellowish/greenish velvety spore-balls.
    • The application of organic manures and high dose of nitrogenous fertilizers also increases the intensity of attack.

    For management,
    • Destruction of straw and stubble from the infected plants.
    • Early planted crop had less smut balls than the late planted crop.
    • Field bunds and irrigation channels should be kept clean to eliminate alternate hosts.
    • Excess application of nitrogenous fertilizer should be avoided.
