GINGER (Step 6)
Nursery Management
-
Choose healthy ginger rhizomes for seeding.
-
Spray the selected rhizomes with Mancozeb (3g/lit) and Quinalphos (0.75ml/lit) and maintain them in a well-ventilated location for 30 minutes.
-
A month before planting, the seed rhizomes are divided into single buds with little pieces of rhizomes weighing 4-6 g.
-
Mancozeb @3g/lit should be applied to single bud sprouts 30 minutes before planting.
-
Fill the pro-trays (98 cells) with nursery medium enriched with PGPR/Trichoderma 10g/kg of mixture and partially decomposed coir pith and vermicompost (75:25).
-
Place the ginger bud shoots in pro-trays.
-
Use shade nets or place the pro-trays under the shade of trees to keep them in partial shade.
-
Place the ginger bud shoots in pro-trays.
-
To provide need-based irrigation, use a rose can or sprinklers.
-
Within 30-40 days, seedlings will be ready to transplant.
MULCHING:
-
To avoid soil splashing and erosion due to heavy rain, mulch the beds with green leaves or organic waste.
-
It also adds organic matter to the soil, controls weed emergence, and conserves moisture in the cropping season's latter stages.
-
Green leaves (4-5 tonnes/acre) are used for the first mulching at the time of sowing.
-
For effective weed control in ginger, apply dried coconut leaves after removing the midrib or paddy straw (2-3 kg/bed) as mulch.
-
At 45and 90days following planting, green leaf mulching will be applied at 3 tonnes per acre.
