Storage of rice for longer periods is possible if three conditions are met:

1. Less than 14% moisture should be maintained for grain and less than 12% for seed.

2. Grain should be protected from insects, rodents, and birds.

3. Grain should be protected from rewetting by rain or imbibing moisture from the surrounding air.

Major storage pests of rice include Rice weevil, Grain moth, Lesser grain borer, Saw toothed grain beetle etc.,

Before staking, dusting Malathion 5% will reduce infestation to new stock.

Aluminium Phosphide 56% (F) available in the form of tablets is used as fumigant (each tablet weight is about 3 grams)

Malathion 50% EC diluted with water @ 1:100. 3 litres solution is used to treat 100m² area for surface treatment on bags containing stock, walls and alleyways. It will be effective for 15-20 days.

Deltamethrin 2.5% WP: Dissolve 120 g in 3 litres water to treat 100m² area for surface treatment on bags containing stock, walls and alleyways. It is effective for 90 days.
